The European Union To Place A Ban ON Animal Testing

The European Union is expected to place a ban against importing and selling animal-tested cosmetic products and ingredients across the 27 member states beginning March 11.
According to WWD, the ban states that companies who want to sell new cosmetics and ingredients in the EU must not test them on animals anywhere in the world. The EU’s health commissioner, Tonio Borg, wrote a letter to anti-animal-testing campaigners:

“I believe that the ban should enter into force in March 2013 as Parliament and Council have already decided. I am therefore not planning to propose a postponement or derogation to the ban. This decision also means that we need to step up our efforts in the development, validation and acceptance of alternative methods, as well as in the international recognition of these methods. I know that ECEAE [a European coalition of leading animal-protection organizations across Europe] has been a valuable and knowledgeable partner in these areas and I count on your future support.”

WWD notes that the anti-animal-testing ban has been long in the making. In 1991, the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments was created to end animal-testing for cosmetics, and The Body Shop has been championing its own cruelty-free products since 1993.
